We’re Not Afraid to Die Class 11 Summary | Hornbill Chapter 2 (Easy English)

Chapter 2: We’re Not Afraid to Die... if We Can All Be Together

1. About the Authors

Gordon Cook and Alan East wrote this story based on a real-life adventure. Gordon Cook is a sailor, and this story describes the amazing courage shown by his family during a dangerous journey around the world. The story proves that unity and bravery can help us survive even the worst situations.

2. The Mission

In July 1976, the narrator (the father), his wife Mary, their son Jonathan (6), and daughter Suzanne (7), set sail from England. They wanted to travel around the world in their ship, the Wavewalker.

  • The Ship: It was a professional 23-meter, 30-ton wooden boat.

  • The Crew: They took two professional sailors, Larry Vigil and Herb Seigler, to help them.

3. The Disaster: When the Giant Wave Hit

On January 2nd, a "monstrous" (giant) wave hit the ship with a sound like thunder. A massive explosion shook the deck, and a wall of water broke over the ship. The boat was almost turning over, and the father was thrown into the ocean before being tossed back onto the deck.

4. The Struggle with Broken Equipment

As if the giant waves weren't enough, their equipment started failing. This part shows how difficult it was to find their way:

  • The Main Compass was Lost: The ship's main compass was gone. The father had to use a spare compass which was not very accurate.

  • Calculating the Path: He had to make guesses based on the wind and the speed of the water. He was trying to find a tiny island called Ile Amsterdam, which was only 65 kilometers wide in a massive 150-million-kilometer ocean! It was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

  • The Last Chance: At 2:00 PM on January 6th, the father checked his calculations one last time. He told the crew to steer the boat to 185 degrees. He told them that if they were lucky, they would see the island by 5:00 PM.

5. Finally Finding the Island

The father was so tired that he went to his bunk and fell asleep. He woke up at 6:00 PM and thought they had missed the island. He felt very sad.

Suddenly, Jonathan and Suzanne came to him.

  • The Hug: Jonathan asked, "Can I have a hug?"

  • The Good News: They told him he was the "best captain" because they had found the island!

  • The Sight: He rushed to the deck and saw Ile Amsterdam. It was just a dark piece of volcanic rock with very little plants, but to them, it was the most beautiful place on Earth.

6. The Success

They anchored the ship offshore for the night. The next morning, all 28 people living on the island cheered for them and helped them get onto the land. After days of pain and fear, they were finally safe.

7. Conclusion

This chapter teaches us that hope and teamwork can help us face any disaster. Because the children were brave and the father did not give up—even when his compass was broken—they all survived.
